The path, step by step
- Student Pilot Licence (SPL): ground training can begin from age 16
- DGCA medical certification: Class 2 medical (vision, hearing, ECG, general fitness) is needed early; Class 1 medical is required before the CPL itself
- Ground training: aviation fundamentals, aerodynamics, meteorology, navigation, air law, aircraft systems, and radio communication
- Flying training: minimum 200 hours of flight time, including pilot-in-command, cross-country, instrument, and night-flying hours
- Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL): minimum age 18, issued by DGCA once all requirements are met
Eligibility at a glance
DGCA itself does not fix a minimum academic percentage for CPL eligibility, but most Flying Training Organisations (FTOs) set their own cutoff — commonly 50-60% in Physics and Mathematics at the 10+2 level. Proficiency in English is expected throughout, since both ground exams and radio communication are conducted in English.
What the 200 flying hours actually cover
- 100 hours as Pilot-in-Command
- 20 hours of cross-country flight time as Pilot-in-Command
- 10 hours dedicated to instrument training
- 5 hours of night flight time
The remaining hours are made up through dual instruction and general flight training time before you're ready for the CPL flight test.

Total CPL costs in India vary hugely by flying school, aircraft type, and location — estimates commonly range from roughly Rs 40 lakh to Rs 80 lakh once you add flying training, ground classes, DGCA examination fees, medical certification, study material, and licence fees together.
