What a GDS actually does
A Global Distribution System (GDS) is the software layer that connects travel agents and airlines together. Instead of contacting each airline separately, a travel consultant uses a GDS like Amadeus to search flight availability, compare fares, build an itinerary, and issue tickets — all from one system, across multiple airlines at once. Amadeus is one of the three major GDS platforms used worldwide, alongside Sabre and Galileo.
The jargon, decoded
Passenger Name Record — the booking file holding a passenger's itinerary, contact details, and special requests.
Looking up applicable fare rules and calculating the actual ticket price for an itinerary.
Issuing the e-ticket itself, plus handling cancellations, refunds, and exchanges afterward.
Add-ons like seat selection, meals, and baggage — logged as Special Service Requests in the PNR.
What certification actually signals to employers
Amadeus GDS skills are typically taught through hands-on, practical training rather than pure classroom theory, since the whole point is being able to operate the live system confidently. A completion certificate signals to an employer that you can already navigate the system, build a PNR, price an itinerary, and issue a ticket — skills that would otherwise take weeks of on-the-job training to pick up from scratch.
Where this training leads
Amadeus GDS skills open roles across travel agencies, airlines, tour operators, and corporate travel management — commonly as a travel consultant, airline ticketing agent, or reservations executive. Some travel BPO and freelance travel-service roles built around GDS skills also offer remote or work-from-home options. Familiarity with the broader landscape (other GDS platforms, IATA processes) tends to make candidates more versatile across employers.
